1948 – Porsche 356

‘In July 1948, a murmur makes its way through the village of Gmünd in Kärnten. A vehicle drives through the idyllic town in the Alps – a car unlike any other the world had ever seen: stylish and dynamic, sporty, infinitely elegant.’

‘The Porsche 356 glistens in the Austrian summer sunshine: the first vehicle with the official brand name ,Porsche’. Previously, the automotive design office of Ferdinand Porsche had developed all of its vehicles in the name of other manufacturers.’

The first Porsche had a four-cylinder engine – and it won over car fans, not only by its charming appearance, but also by its fast-paced character. The very first 356 prototype – production number 1 – raced a fast demonstration lap at the city street race in Innsbruck.

Back then it still had a mid-engine; later in production, it was replaced by a rear-mounted engine. The engine in the 356 is an old acquaintance. It is based on the Volkswagen flat engine that was developed by the Porsche design office in the 1930s.

After Innsbruck, it could no longer be held back. There is hardly a classic race the car has not won: the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 1000 Kilometres of Buenos Aires, the Mille Miglia, Targa Florio, Carrera Panamericana. The Porsche 356 was always out at the front.

1953 – Porsche 550 Spyder

In 1952, Porsche KG decided to become involved in manufacturer’s racing. The Porsche race car was to be compact, powerful and fast. And above all lightweight to ideally utilise the engine’s power. Engineers went to work – and created the 550 Spyder. Mid-engine construction, ultralight aluminium body, 550 kg unladen weight.

In 1972, the company’s legal form was changed from ,KommanditGesellschaft’ (KG), or limited partnership, to ,AktienGesellschaft’ (AG), or public limited company, because Ferry Porsche came to believe the scale of the company outgrew a ‘family operation’, after learning about Soichiro Honda’s ‘no family members in the company’ policy at Honda.

This led to the establishment of an Executive Board with members from outside the Porsche family, and a Supervisory Board consisting largely of family members. With this change, most family members in the operation of the company including F. A. Porsche and Ferdinand Piëch departed from the company.

And a four-cylinder flat engine that made itself heard quite loudly. Named the Fuhrmann engine after its designer, the engine developed a respectable 110 hp thanks to four camshafts. That was 60 hp more than the first 356 engine just five years prior. It catapulted the Spyder to high speeds of up to 220 km/h.

Its performance at the Targa Florio in 1956 was legendary. At this tradition-rich endurance race in Sicily, Umberto Maglioli and Huschke von Hanstein went to the start in a Porsche 550 A. And they finished victorious – with a full 15 minute lead over even the six- and eight-cylinder competition.

1957 – Porsche 718

Once again, race engineers accomplished a tremendous task. Despite the visual similarities to its predecessor, the 550 Spyder, the performance data of the Porsche 718 RSK spoke a unique language. At first, 148 hp, and in the 718 RS60 with 1.6 litres of displacement an impressive 160 hp, were teased from the four-cylinder engine.

With an unladen weight of just 530 kg, the 718 also trimmed some significant weight compared to the 550 A Spyder that weighed 550 kg. The mid-engine sports car could now sweep over the asphalt at a maximum speed of 260 km/h.

Thanks to this increase in performance, the Porsche 718 even surpassed the success of its predecessor. At the Targa Florio, the 718 was overall victor in 1959 and 1960; it raced to a class victory in 1958 and 1961, and it was the uninterrupted European Hill Climb Champion from 1958 to 1961. The 718 was also modified into a single-seater and competed in Formula-2 and Formula-1 racing.

Porsche engine: ‘547/3 F4′ – 1 498 cm3 – 170 hp to 8500tr/min – flat-4

Heritage photo - Porsche 904 Carrera GTS Le Mans - 1964

Heritage photo – Porsche 904 Carrera GTS Le Mans – 1964

An innovation at Porsche: the steel box frame of the Carrera GTS is joined to a body made of polymer. The glass fibre reinforced polyester resin developed by ,BASF’ gives the car body an elementary advantage: lightness. And it made genuine racers out of the stylistically confident rockets designed by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche with their characteristic design.

Not only in motorsport competitions, but also in the hands of individual customers. Demand for the elegant mid-engine sports car was so high that in addition to the 100 units needed for homologation an additional 16 Carrera GTS cars were built.

In 1964, the Carrera GTS achieved a prestigious victory. After 720 high-paced kilometres over dusty streets and through tight bends, after seven hours and ten minutes of wild driving along the coast of Northern Sicily, Antonio Pucci and Colin Davis charged across the finish line in first place at the Targa Florio. Once again, the Fuhrmann engine, Porsche’s proven four-cylinder flat engine put on a display for its class.

The 904’s engine layout was inherited from the 718, also known as the RSK (for ,Rennsport’ or ‘racing’ & ,kurz’ or ‘short’), the factory’s leading race car. It was powered by the 1,966 cc Type 587/3, four-cam flat four-cylinder engine producing 198 hp, « probably the most complex four-cylinder » ever.

It drove a five-speed transmission. Begun as the Type 547, its development began in 1953, when the previous VW-based 1,100 cc flat-four, used in the contemporary 356 and rated at 38 hp, hit the limit of its potential. Porsche realized it needed something all-new.

The brainchild of Dr. Ernst Fuhrmann, later Technical Director, it was hoped to achieve an ‘unheard of’ 70 hp per 1 l,relying on hemispherical combustion chambers (which would be called ‘‘Hemi’ of hemispherical‘ by Chrysler in the U.S. … later under the hood in Dodge HEMI by FCA group) and Weber carburetors to generate 112 hp from the 1,500 cc four-cam engine.

The 1.5 liter produce 180 hp. A complex design that proved ‘very taxing’ to build and assemble, but very durable, it was used in 34 different models, including 550 Spyders, 356 Carreras, and F2/1s.

1976 – Porsche 924

To introduce its new model, Porsche planned a high-speed drive. It optimised a Porsche 924 to set an endurance speed record. The goal was to drive the car a distance of 10,000 miles at an average speed of over 250 km/h. The engineers soup up the standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine to 250 hp, and the aerodynamics of the 924 are further perfected in the wind tunnel. This boosts the top speed of the endurance sports car to 280 km/h.

However, the record attempt would never take place – shortly before the drive planned in July 1977 the project was stopped for strategic reasons.

As a topical response to the oil crisis of the early 1970s, it was decided that the production 924 would be equipped with an efficient four-cylinder in-line engine. For the first time, Porsche also employed a water-cooled front engine in combination with a transaxle gearbox at the rear axle.

In the base version, the compact sports car had a power output of 125 hp, and the S versions up to 160 hp. The turbocharged engine of the 924 Carrera GT even reaches 210 hp and a top speed of 240 km/h.

In successor models to the 924, the 944 and 968, the designers remained true to the combination of an in-line four-cylinder engine and the transaxle concept. The 944 became one of the most successful sports cars of its time – and it saved Porsche AG through the economically turbulent 1980s.

2016 – ’40 years of the transaxle’

On the one hand, they are ideal sports cars, and on the another an aberration in Porsche history: the transaxle models. The Porsche Museum is showing examples in a special exhibit from April 27 to October 16, 2016.

‘In 1976, Porsche introduced the transaxle powertrain configuration in the type 924 and embarked into new territory. The engine is mounted in front, but the transmission is at the rear axle. Between 1976 and 1995, Porsche built a generation of sports cars that deviated far from the established principles of the 911 – in the types 924, 928, 944 and 968. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of these models, the Porsche Museum is showing 23 exceptional examples of these cars in the framework of the special exhibition « The Transaxle Era. From the 924 to the 928. » Over half of these cars are being exhibited at the museum for the first time ever.’

‘Transaxle Day’ on May 22

Sunday, May 22, is ‘International Museum Day’, and the Porsche Museum invites visitors to attend its « Transaxle Day ». Along with free admission on that Sunday, many guided tours will be conducted through the special exhibition. In addition, private owners will be showing their transaxle vehicles at various parking places around the museum. Visitors can look them over at the entrance plaza to the museum, in the logistics courtyard and in front of the branch office. A highlight will be the Transaxle Talk at the shop inside the museum, in which time period witnesses who were very involved with the models will offer a retrospective on the development and successes of the 924, 928, 944 and 968 models.

1981 – Porsche 944

In one of the successor models to the 924, the 944, the designers remained true to the combination of an in-line four-cylinder engine and the transaxle concept. In 1981, it closed the gap between the entry-level 924 model and the 911 SC. With 163 hp and a list price of 38,900 DM, the 944 was positioned precisely between the two models.

The centrepiece of the 944 was its newly engineered naturally-aspirated engine with 2.5 litres of displacement. The in-line four-cylinder engine is based on the right cylinder bank of the eight-cylinder engine of the Porsche 928. Thanks to the use of two Lanchester balancer shafts, the 944 engine was smoother running than many six-cylinder engines. Its digital engine electronics and L-Jetronic fuel injection also pointed the way to the future.

Turbocharger

The displacement of the new 718 Boxster and Cayman models has been considerably reduced with the aim of lowering fuel consumption. Nevertheless, the power output of the new engines has been significantly increased. This has been possible thanks to the turbochargers developed for the 718 models completely from scratch.

The respective turbocharger is particularly compact and has been optimally adapted to the displacement and power output of the engine.

The result could not deliver a clearer message. The extraordinarily wide torque plateau makes itself felt with each demand for throttle – barely 30 cm behind your back. And that’s despite a considerable reduction in fuel consumption and emission values. After all, what is performance without intelligence?

Variable turbine geometry (VTG)

The new 718 Boxster S comes equipped with variable turbine geometry (VTG). Adjustable guide vanes on the turbine act to combine the benefits of a small and a large exhaust turbocharger. Derived from the proven 911 Turbo and adapted specifically for the 718 Boxster S, this technology helps to deliver excellent responsiveness at low engine speeds and provide a high maximum power output.

English summary

The new Porsche 718 Cayman

The fourth, redeveloped generation of the mid-engine sport coupé is extending the new model series just a few weeks after the debut of the new 718 Boxster.

The same new four-cylinder flat engines with turbocharging as in the 718 Boxster are being deployed in the 718 Cayman. As a result, coupé and roadster have an identical engine output for the first time. The entry-level version starts with 300 hp from two litres of displacement. The S model delivers 350 hp with a displacement of 2.5 litres. This represents 25 hp more power compared to the predecessor models with an NEDC fuel consumption of 8.1 to 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres.

Even better torque in all engine speed ranges

The tremendous torque of the new engines in the 718 Cayman promises driving fun and agility even at low revs. The two-litre engine of the 718 Cayman achieves a torque of up to 380 Nm (plus 90 Nm), which is available between 1,950 rpm and 4,500 rpm. The 2.5-litre engine of the 718 Cayman S features a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG), a technology hitherto used exclusively in the 911 Turbo. In the 718 Cayman S, the VTG charger additionally has a wastegate for the first time.

It delivers up to 420 Nm (an extra 50 Nm) to the crankshaft at engine speeds between 1,900 and 4,500 rpm. For the driver this means even better torque in all engine speed ranges. The 718 Cayman with PDK and optional Sport Chrono Package sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. The 718 Cayman S completes this sprint in 4.2 seconds. The top speed of the 718 Cayman is 275 km/h, and the 718 Cayman S can reach a speed of 285 km/h.

New chassis tuning for greater precision and more lateral stability

In terms of their driving dynamics, the new 718 Cayman models follow in the tracks of the classic 718 cars. Thanks to their outstanding agility, the historic mid-engine sports cars won numerous races in the 1950s and 1960s such as the Targa Florio and Le Mans.

Lateral rigidity and wheel tracking have been improved in the completely retuned chassis of the 718 Cayman; springs and stabilisers have been designed to be firmer and the tuning of the shock absorbers has been revised. The steering, which has been configured to be ten per cent more direct, enhances agility and driving fun. The rear wheels, which are one-half of an inch wider, in combination with the redeveloped tyres result in an increased lateral force potential and hence in greater cornering stability.

Driving dynamics options such as the Sport Chrono Package and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) allow the sporty character of the 718 Cayman to be further customised. Another available option is PASM with a ten-millimetre lowering of the ride height and additionally in the S model PASM sport suspension with a 20-millimetre lowering of the ride height for the first time. As in the other Porsche sports cars, the Sport Chrono Package can be adjusted via the programme switch on the steering wheel. Supplementing the previous settings of “Normal”, “Sport” and “Sport Plus” is the “Individual” programme, which is able to call up previously programmed individual settings for various systems.

On account of the car’s greater driving performance capabilities, stronger brake systems are now in use with 330-millimetre brake discs in front and 299-millimetre discs at the rear. The 718 Cayman now has the brake system that was previously used in the Cayman S. The 718 Cayman S, on the other hand, uses the four-piston callipers of the 911 Carrera combined with six-millimetre thicker brake discs.

Distinctive design for a more muscular appearance

The new 718 Cayman has been further developed as comprehensively in its design as in its technology. The taut proportions, prominent air intakes at the front and sides and low side profile underscore the boost in dynamics. The nose has a much sharper profile, which gives the front end a wider and more masculine appearance. The ultra-slim front lights above the air intakes, which contain the parking lights and indicators, further reinforce this impression.

Rounding off the front end of the 718 Cayman, are the significantly larger cooling air intakes and bi-xenon headlights in their new design with integrated LED daytime running lights. LED headlights with four-point daytime running lights are available as a new option. Viewed from the side, the new sport coupé reveals its striking wings and side sills. The redesigned rear has a much wider look due to the accent strip in high-gloss black with integrated Porsche badge between the tail lights. The tail lights have been completely redesigned and are distinguished by the three-dimensional technology and four brake spots that appear to float freely.

Redesigned interior and PCM as standard

Inside, revisions are visible for both the 718 Cayman and the 718 Boxster. The upper part of the dash panel including air vents is new. The new sport steering wheel in the 918 Spyder design as well as the extensive connectivity options have now been added to the 718 cockpit along with the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) as a standard feature. Mobile phone preparation, audio interfaces and the 150-watt Sound Package Plus are all part of this standard. Options are available to extend the PCM.

The Connect module, for example, includes special extensions for smartphones, such as the USB port, Apple CarPlay and Porsche Car Connect. Another available option is the navigation module with voice control, which makes it easy to input driving destinations. If the Connect Plus module is selected, this can be extended with real-time traffic information. Drivers can also make use of additional comprehensive services via their smartphone, which include the Porsche Connect App and Porsche Car Connect App.
